About Me

I am a full time career firefighter in the Indianapolis area. I am a devoted husband, loving father and a passionate Beachbody Coach who has dedicated his life to health and fitness.

My Chiari Story

In January of 2009 I underwent a post fossa craniectomy (brain surgery) to relieve pressure in the skull and damage to the cerebellum due to a Arnold Chiari Malformation. Thus began the long road to getting back into shape for duty.

P90X and Beachbody

P90X and Beachbody changed my life…literally. Originally I had hoped to lose “a few pounds” (20) and get back on duty quickly. Two years later, I’ve lost over 40 lbs and I’m in the best shape I’ve been in 20 years!

Today is opening day of the NFL season.  I've been chewing on something for almost three years now and it's only getting worse.  I know that I so risk the wrath of my fellow Colts fans today but I've never been one to not say something because it's not popular.  Unfortunately,  I have to post this.

When Tony Dungy left the Colts and named Jim Caldwell his successor, I was not only skeptical but extremely disappointed.  Against conventional thought in my city, I was not a big  Tony Dungy fan (as a coach.  He is a tremendous human being and fantastic role model!).  I just simply believe that despite winning a Super Bowl, there were many coaching mistakes made throughout his career.  He was a good coach, with an exceptional cast of coaches and players around him.  I’m not so sure we shouldn’t have 2,3 maybe even 4 Super Bowl rings here.

Caldwell was and still is an unproven extension of that coaching style and philosophy.  Many point to his first season as head coach and the 13-0 start.  To this I reply, “and Barry Switzer won a Super Bowl his first year as head coach with the Dallas team he inherited from Jimmy Johnson”.  Then I point to last years season of penalties, dropped balls and other mental mistakes.  Usually indicative of poor leadership.

My hopes for the 2011-12 season have faded more and more since last winter.  I stated then that I expected the Colts’ to go 10-6 because of a weaker schedule and a weak division.  It’s gone downhill from there.

Here are some of the other  reasons:

Little Polian is now running the show is he qualified to do so???  By looking at the free agent activity, or lack there of, I’m a little leery.  The typical response here is, “The Colts rarely are active during free agency.  They choose to build through the draft.”.  True.  But that was when we had a young, super talented, genius quarterback that had nothing but time on his hands and could work miracles.  We still have that super talented, genius quarterback on our hands but he is not young and in recent weeks has shown is human like everyone else.  We don’t have time to “build”.  We should adapt and start “reloading”.

Tom Moore is gone.  The genius (Moore) behind the genius (Manning).  Manning is spectacular and would have had a stellar career just about anywhere for anyone, but Moore designed this offense over the years to fit Manning’s personality and ability.  Sure, Manning knows it like the back of his hand and one could make the argument that he doesn’t need Moore.  But in a league of geniuses that get paid big money to find weaknesses in any system, keeping what works is fleeting.  You have to constantly adapt.  (side note:  Moore is now in New York with the defensive guru, Rex Ryan and they were very aggressive in the free agent market!).

The defense has NEVER been able to stop the run.  This year will be no different.  I just mentioned that you have to constantly adapt.  I’m not so sure we’ve done that defensively.  The moment is gone.  Small, fast defensive players are no longer a surprise.  In fact, it’s so elementary that teams like Miami and Jacksonville can put up astronomical numbers against us.  The more they run, the more we are run down and the more they run.  It doesn’t work and becomes less effective as time goes on.

Now, the BIG issue.  Manning is out.  Supposedly for a “2-3 months”.  Yeah right.  And the first surgery was no big deal (obviously it was because he had a second).  And the second surgery wasn’t a big deal (obviously it was because he’s having another just a few months after).  I don’t believe a word of it.  Manning is past the mid 30’s mark.  I don’t care how good he is, he is human and like other greats before him (ie. Michael Jordan, Cal Ripken Jr, Wayne Gretzky, etc) he will one day not be what he was.

Collins is in.  Kerry Collins is one of those guys who I have always rooted for.  And I absolutely love it he is here.  He is a good, solid, smart quarterback who knows what he’s capable of and more importantly, what he is not capable of.  He makes good decisions and probably won’t hurt you. But the problem here is not Collins ability or lack there of.  The problem here is this mediocre run game.

Addai is not a spectacular back.  He wouldn’t start for many teams around the league.  He is strong and good for 3-5 yards when they need it.  He is nothing too bad but by far anything spectacular.  And our offensive line was built for pass protection.  It’s not made for consistent run blocking.

But its worked in the past, right?  Yes.  But the big difference is that even though Collins is solid, he is not Peyton Manning.  Manning made the run game seem better than it is.  Defenses have to respect Manning and his receiving corps on every down so much that the run game, by default is moderately successful.  Take away that threat, and a couple of adjustments later, and the run game is shut down and Collins suddenly has a lot more pressure on him than people realize.  Unfortunately, I think it’s a now win situation for him.

So where are we at?  Well, now I’m being labeled as not being a “True Blue Fan”.  That is pure poppycock.  I’ve been a fan before 75% of the people who have their pretty, clean, new jerseys on and horseshoes painted on their face every Sunday even cared what was going on.  I sat in pure agony during 1-5 win seasons and my loyalty never waivered.

But despite being a loyal fan, I’m not an ignorant fan.  The ride is over.  The Colt’s will struggle so much this year that it scares me to think of an 8-8 Colt’s team but it could be a reality.  In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if it goes so wrong that we end up (God forbid) 7-9 or 6-10.  If we have some things go our way, we could still eek out a Division crown but I think that is a coin toss at best.

I guess the best we can hope for is that with Kerry Collins in town, maybe he will slip Jeff Fishers phone number to Jim Irsay.

Recently I had someone who I considered a "friend" take some jabs bringing up old stuff. When asked directly about her sarcastic barb, she replied, "your beachbody posts are just getting old". Ironically enough, the initial comment had nothing to do with Beachbody but I was thankful that the truth quickly surfaced. This is twice this has happened with two different people.

The answer here is that misery doesn't like a mirror to be held in her face. Both people who said this are indeed extremely overweight and unhealthy. I am certain they probably don't like my Beachbody posts because it triggers their own insecurities.

I assure you this is never my intent. Ironically enough, my Beachbody and fitness posts has nothing to do with anyone but me. It is my Facebook, my Twitter and my blog. I do find it puzzling that someone has the sense of entitlement that they can dictate what I post and what I don't post. (It is important to note that if someone takes offense to a random post by someone else, it is more than likely that persons guilt that makes it personal for them).

The important piece to this is to not worry about what everyone else thinks. Do what you feel is right in your heart. Be open to constructive criticism but do not allow other people to ultimately cause you to wander from your path. When you stand up and push forward to be a strong leader for something you believe in, others will be intimidated because it will disrupt their comfort zone. Unfortunately, when we committ to growing and working to be better people, we will in fact rub some people the wrong way and possibly lose friends. If this happens, you have to remember, they weren't a friend worth having in the first place.

I'm not sure this person could understand my brutal honesty when I informed her that I, in fact, did not care how my posts made her feel and whether she liked them or not. It wasn't to be mean, it was to be honest. I am working to help other people enrich their lives and that is way more important than placating someone who is ok with being unhappy with where they currently are in life. My understanding of where my heart lies, and the committment to follow my dreams, helps me to sleep well at night, no matter who had something negative to say, or who "defriended" me today of Facebook.

Bill Cosby said, "I don't know what the key to success is but the key to failure is trying to please everybody."

Beachbody probably isn't what you think.....

How I lowered my cholesterol 35%...NATURALLY!!!!

How I lowered my Cholesterol...NATURALLY!
A little over a year ago, in a sample of bloodwork I had done prior to my Decompression Surgery (see my Chiari) I was alerted that my total Cholesterol had broken 300. It was 301 in fact. Well as you can imagine, my doctor and I were both alarmed.

According to the American Heart Association, an estimated 102.2 million adults in the United States have total blood cholesterol values of 200 mg/dL and higher, and of these about 35.7 million American adults have levels of 240 or above. In adults, total cholesterol levels of 240 mg/dL or higher are considered high risk. Levels from 200 to 239 mg/dL are considered borderline-high risk.

You can see why the concern. My doctor wanted to put me on Cholesterol medication. It is hereditary so I have a natural predisposition for it. However, I believe that medication is over used and over prescribed in our society. I can't understand why people are so quick to take medications, ignoring the side affects and sometimes, end up taking another pill to control the side affects. I'm not so sure that medications, at times, aren't doing more harm than good. (Obviously I am not a doctor and do not advocate neglecting medical issues or disobeying a doctors orders. Any health issue, and the course of treatment should be discussed thoroughly with a physician. A diet and exercise program is no exception!)

So, against her wishes, I set out to change my lifestyle.

Long story short, through diet and regular exercise, I dropped my Cholesterol 36% to 192!!!!

How did I do it?

Very simple.

I went grassroots. I thought to myself, "what would it be like if there were no grocery stores or fast food restaurants?". I figured that it only made sense to eat the way we were intended to eat. Thousands, even just a few hundred years ago, we worked for our food. We toiled on the land, we chased and hunted, we fished. There is a reason that Twinkies don't grow on trees, or boxed macaroni and cheese doesn't come out of the ground, or...well, you get the point!

We began researching and we stunned and amazed at just how deceiving food companies are. Our society has eaten so poorly for so many years that even when we think we are eating healthy, we aren't. Basically almost anything in a box or a plastic wrapper (processed food) is NOT good for you. I don't care if it says something like "low sodium" or "heart healthy". Those statements are statements that fall under loose standards. When you check the "low sodium" you will find it's only reduced. I've seen "low sodium" soup that 1/2 cup has over 1/2 of the recommended daily allowance.

The reality is that processed food contains chemicals, preservatives, large amounts of sodium, high fructose corn syrup, etc. All of these things are not good for the human body. They cause health problems and are hard for your body to digest.

So, I cut them out for the most part. I strive for 75% of the food I eat to be raw. Raw fruits, raw vegetables, raw nuts. I am not a full vegetarian but don't eat meat everyday. When I do, I try to eat chicken or fish. NEVER anything fried. Salad dressings? Olive oil based only. Preferrably some type of vinegar and oil. That other garbage is just that, garbage!

Then, I found Beachbody . I started P90X and started incorporating Shakeology into my meal plans daily. I lost so much weight and felt so much better almost immediately that I signed up to be a Beachbody Coach to help others do what I was doing. In reality, that only made me more motivated!

I truly believe that these three things: A good 5-7 day a week workout regimine (such as P90X , INSANITY , Slim in 6 , or any other Beachbody program ), "clean" eating such as 75% raw fruits and veggies and the healthiest meal of the day, Shakeology can dramatically change your health. It has mine. Not only is my Cholesterol down over 100 points, putting me back in "normal" range, but I've lost 35 lbs and I feel better than I have felt in many years.

THE FOLLOWING IS AN EXCERPT TAKEN FROM THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION WEBSITE:

How does physical activity affect cholesterol?

Regular physical activity increases HDL cholesterol in some people. A higher HDL cholesterol is linked with a lower risk of heart disease. Physical activity can also help control weight, diabetes and high blood pressure. Aerobic physical activity raises your heart and breathing rates. Regular moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity such as brisk walking, jogging and swimming also condition your heart and lungs.

Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for heart disease. Even moderate-intensity activities, if done daily, help reduce your risk. Examples are walking for pleasure, gardening, yard work, housework, dancing and prescribed home exercise.

P90X: Round 5

On July 11, 2011 a large group of my customers on Facebook started doing P90X together on the same day. Most will do their workouts individually from home, some will do them together but all have committed to keeping each other motivated by posting the days events, results, set backs and triumphs in our group. The feeback has been tremendous and the encouragement is awesome!

So stoked!

This is my fifth round. First round I was miserably out of shape coming off brain surgery. I struggled through every workout. Second round was a little better. I felt more confident and could do most of them. Third round was the first time I could do the Plyometrics video all the way through. And round four was the first time I had ever done an unassisted pull up in my life.

This is the round of reckoning. It’s time. I’ve worked hard to get to where I’m at. I can see definition that I haven’t seen for a long time. Now, I’m going for a body I have never had. I’m going for shred.

Also, I’m carb cycling. Strength days are complex carbs with fibrous fruit. Non strength days are very little carbs with the exception of recovery drink and Shakeology.

I will post pictures at 30, 60 and 90 days. I will also make occasional entries about my progress. Please ask any questions you like. I’d be happy to answer them.

Phase 1

July 11, 2011

I again made great progress this round. I started out barely squeezing out real unassisted pullups. This in itself is a great milestone. Tall, with long arms, and carrying excess weight for the last 20 years, I had never done a real pullup in my life ever until the end of Round 4. Though I still wouldn't say I'm a pro, or even "good" at them yet, I definitely am well on my way to competantly doing pull ups forever.

I also made great strides in pushups. I did literally almost twice as many pushups on week 3 Chest & Back day as I did on week 1! Very pleased with the size gains as well. I went for low reps, higher weight and on Leg & Back day I added a 5 x 5 bench and squat routine to help gain mass. Who says you can't gain mass on P90X? Tell them they are wrong!

Also, I do have to say that Michele and I made a switch. We are not doing Yoga X. Instead we ordered Deepak Chopra's Advanced Yoga video. It is still a great workout for strength and flexibility that makes you sweat but it's about 30 minutes shorter and much more relaxing. We combine it with other physical activity throughout the day. Some call it cheating, I call it realistic. We had gotten to where we just absolutely dreaded Yoga X (and we both love Yoga). This minimizes the risk of skipping the thing altogether!

Phase 2

Phase 2 has started out well. The benefits of muscle confusion by the change in routine is still evident even after 4 rounds! Sore is the word of the first week in each new phase.

Got away from the carb cycling this first week. Also missed Legs & Back (and bench & squat 5 x 5). Not happy about it but lack of sleep and a busy schedule interfered. Rest is just as important as the work. It's important to take care of ourselves. So, I'm going to catch up on my rest so Monday I can hit the ground with scorching speed and make great strides in week 6 (week 2 of phase 2).

Stay tuned

Meal plan for a typical day for me

A lot of people have asked me about my diet. It varies from time to time and as anything in life should be, constantly evolves because I never stop trying to learn. But here are some highlights of how I try to eat on a daily basis:

First and foremost, I try to eat clean. (Refer to Michi’s Ladder for a quick reference guide on clean foods). Just because when you eat something and you don’t get sick immediately and/or die does NOT mean it isn’t poisonous. Sometimes we poison our bodies and aren’t aware of what is happening (see entry on “Coke”). Organic and natural eliminates\ the risk of toxins, primarily pesticides) meant to kill insects. (If it can kill an insect, don’t you think it causes some kind of damage to humans?) and hormones and steroids (still be sure to carefully read any and all labels. Lobbyists pay big money to have congress change food laws to dupe consumers). Also, look for grass fed beef, free range/vegetarian chickens, etc. (For a massive eye opening experience please rent and watch the documentary, “Food Inc.”

Also, stay away from anything processed as much as possible, ESPECIALLY anything with high fructose corn syrup, enriched flour and MSG (also labeled as “natural flavors”. Remember what I just said about the lobbyists???)

Fresh or frozen is really the only way to go.

So, on a typical day I may eat:

Breakfast:

Cup of straight, black coffee and 4 egg whites with one whole egg, omelets

Mid morning meal:

Oatmeal with REAL maple syrup (1/8 cup)
6 oz glass of REAL orange juice

Lunch:

Shakeology (with peanut butter or fresh fruit)
Banana

Mid afternoon meal:
Handful of almonds and/or cottage cheese
Apple

Dinner:Chicken breast, grass fed beef, or cold water fish
Salad (with olive oil & vinegar)
Fibrous vegetable (i.e. Cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus, etc)
Occasionally wild/brown rice mix
Glass of red wine or micro-brewed dark beer

Dessert:
Fruit (i.e. Fresh strawberries with banana and whipped cream or mixed fruit)

In addition, I try to drink 1/2 gallon to one full gallon of water throughout the day with either a small pinch of Himalayan Salt or fresh lemon juice. Occaisonally have green tea. I have the P90X Results & Recovery immediately following my workout. Occasionally, I will eat more or less of certain foods, including protein bars or shakes, depending on the numbers in my food diary. I use www.myfitnesspal.com to track my foods eaten and thus caloric intake and vitamin levels.

Ever wonder how the body reacts to a soft drink (ie. coke or pepsi)?

I have no idea who the original authoer of this information is or I would credit them for sure. However, this is information that everyone should know. Be responsible about what you put into your body.

•In The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don’t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down.

•20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insul…in burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat. (There’s plenty of that at this particular moment)

•40 minutes: Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, as a response your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness.

•45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.

•>60 minutes: The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.

•>60 Minutes: The caffeine’s diuretic properties come into play. (It makes you have to pee.) It is now assured that you’ll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium and zinc that was headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolyte and water.

•>60 minutes: As the rave inside of you dies down you’ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You’ve also now, literally, pissed away all the water that was in the Coke. But not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like even having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and teeth.

One other piece of information: Phosphoric acid is the major component responsible for carving out Mammoth Cave in Kentucky.

So it's not just about extra calories or extra caffeine. It's literally a destructive force to your body that robs it of vital minerals and nutrients. And day after day, year after year, it will have long term disastrous affects. I recommend that you drink water, unsweetened tea (or natural sweeteners such as stevia or honey), or REAL fruit juice.

5 Foods That Keep You Thin

Apples

You've heard the term, "an apple a day, keeps the doctor away". And with good reason. Apples are not only rich in anti-oxidants, vitamin C and flavonoids, but also high in dietary fiber.

Apples get a bad rap sometimes because of the recent war on carbs (that's another topic completely!). Apples do contain fructose (fruit sugar) and sucrose (table sugar) but at 75 calories it would take over 25 apples a day to satisfy a typical 2,000 calorie diet.

But more importantly, the high dietary fiber also means that the sugar is absorbed slowly, thus stabalizing blood sugar and decreasing risk for Type 2 Diabetes. Dietary fiber is extremely important for a healthy digestive system and helps reduce cholesterol. It also keeps your hunger more satisfed than say a snack cake with the same calorie amount.

I recently read about a study in the journal "Appetite" that reported that women who added either three apples or three pears to their daily meals, they lost more weight than people who added three oat cookies to their diets -- despite the fact that the apple and the cookie contained the exact same amount of dietary fiber.

And there may be something to the crunchiness according to Alan Aragon, a nutritionist and author of "Girth Control: The Science of Fat Loss & Muscle Gain". He states that the crunchiness of a food may sent signal to the brain satisfiying hunger.

Almonds

I have almonds almost every single day. This is another food that has gotten a bad rap. I hear people say to me all the time, "Those have a lot of fat". I just laugh.

Almonds have shown in studies by "The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" to minimize risk of weight gain. Now I know many people are saying, "but I want to lose weight". Well, this is a good place to start. Adopt almonds into your diet and then burn more calories than you take in. Once you're at optimal weight, stay with the almonds and balance your calories.

An ounce of this food contains only 167 calories, but has 6 g of protein and 3 g of fiber, both nutrients that satisfy hunger. Also, remember the cruchiness factor I mentioned above? Doesn't get any crunchier than almonds!

Salmon

Fish seems to be gaining ini popularity recently, and that is good. However, I still often hear, "I don't eat fish". That, I don't think I will ever understand.

Seafood can be part of a healthy diet. Salmon, and other similar fish, in particular cold water fish, "can boost satiety levels", says Aragon. According to a study published in the "International Journal of Obesity" those who ate salmon a few times a week lost about two more pounds than those who didn't.

Salmon is also low in calories (3 oz serving has just 175 calories), high in protein and rich in Omega fatty acids which help with cardiovascular disease, Depression, Type 2 Diabetes, fatigue, dry & itchy skin, brittle hair & nails, concentration and joint pain.

Eggs

Eggs, are a necessary staple to any healthy diet. (Some controversy exists over if foods that contain cholesterol actually increase your cholesterol. If you have high cholesterol check with your physician and simple seperate the white from the yolk!)

A recent study in the "International Journal of Obesity" studied a group who ate two eggs for breakfast for five days out of the week, they lost 65 percent more weight than those who consumed a bagel each morning. In addition, starting your day off with a high protein meal is believed to help curb your appetite for the rest of the day.

Tomatoes

First and foremost, a tomato is NOT a vegetable, it is a fruit. This puts in on par more witht he apple than with the carrot. However, the point here is that tomatoes are extremely good for you and can be eaten by themselves as where most vegetables require some type of dressing (Hopefully not doused with dirty ranch dressing. Might as well put ice cream on it. Salad dressing should be oil based, in partiular olive oil. That's the way it was for thousands of years until about 30 years ago).

So tomatoes, are a delicious, low calorie option (only 45 calories) that are a source of vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium, iron and dietary fiber.

There are great tasting, wholesome, healthy options out there, that sadly have been almost forgotten in the past few decades of processed convenience and gluttony. It may take a little effort to get back on the path which we were intended, but by slowly adding foods like these back into our daily routine, we can once again begin to feel good about ourselves.

Want a FREE Shakeology sample?

If you are looking for a Shakeology sample look no further.

I personally found Shakeology about a year ago. I resisted at first, dismissing it as just another "protein shake". I couldn't have been more wrong.

Not only do I now have one every single day, but so does my wife, Michele, my three collegiate athlete sons, my six year old daughter, both sisters, my step-mother, and my mother. We can blend them at home, or drop a packet in a shaker cup when on the road or traveling. It's an absolutely amazing product.

The best part about it is the nutrition. It's not just for weight loss, though that is a wonderful side affect. It is about optimal health. It is all natural, with no preservatives. The ingredients are dried and prepared in such a way that it is actually whole food! It is not magic, it's is just good food. It's literally healthier than anything you could eat on any given day, in one glass.

The facts speak for themselves. Don't fall prey to your previous exposure to "health products" and "supplements". This is the game changer. Doctors allover the country are praising it. The American Diabetes Association has approved it for use by diabetic patients. Check the ingredients, check the nutrition information, check the testimonials. See for yourself what doctors are saying about it....

Next question? "How much does it cost?"

Actually Shakeology is relatively inexpensive once you understand what it is. Many people look at the cost as an added expense because of they confuse Shakeology with protein shakes. Shakeology is a meal replacement. It does not cost over and above groceries, it replaces them! So, the $120 for a months supply seems a little shocking at first.

But when you break that down, it's honestly $4 per day for an entire meal. Not only an entire meal but the absolutely healthiest thing you could possibly eat any given day, with NO exceptions. It serves as a meal, daily multi-vitamin, fiber supplement, anti-oxidant supplement, phyto-nutrient supplement, digestive enzyme supplement, and a pro-biotic supplement. Not only that but it's only 140 calories, increases energy, helps you lose weight, makes you flat out healthier and tastes really, really good!!!!!

In addition, calculate the cost of buying a months worth of chicken at the grocery store in one trip? More than $120, right?

What else could we spend $4 on each day?

My Business

THE DAY MY LIFE CHANGED

The day I signed up to be a Beachbody coach, everything in my life changed. What originally just started out as a small opportunity to sell a few P90X's to friends and make a little extra $$ has turned into what I could almost describe as a personal phenomena.

In less than two years, I have lost 45 lbs, I'm in the best shape I've ever been and pushed myself harder than I ever thought possible, have met hundreds of new people and made many new friends allover the world, and grown in every way personally I could imagine (ie relationships, leadership, confidence, creativity, etc)

Oh, and then there is the money! The first reason I signed up is now the last on my list. But don't get me wrong. It's not the least.

I won't publish numbers. But I will say this (and Facebook doesn't lie), in that time, as the sole financial provider for up to 6 people in my household on a Firefighter's salary, I have been to Florida, Mexico, LA, Florida, Chicago, Dallas, LA and Maui, Hawaii. All in the past 18 months (and that doesn't include a cancelled trip to Belize because of an illness).

If stepping outside your comfort zone, and learning to be the person you only dreamed you could be but know deep down inside you really are, here is your opportunity. I won't teach you anything but how to get stared peeling the layers that will lead to your success. It's already there, I can show you how to reveal it. SERIOUS inquiries only. You must be ready to change your life for the better. Contact me if you're ready.

What is Beachbody?

My Chiari

I'm a Chiari patient.

What does that mean?

It means that I was born with a congenital birth defect where my skull is smaller than my brain. This caused intense pressure on the back of my brain and cerebellum. In my case, it actually pushed the cerebellum downward, out of the skull and into the spinal cord.

I had just slowly grown accustom to my symptoms over my lifetime. I thought I just had headaches and balance issues. I thought short term memory lapses and temporary situational confusion were just part of my make up. It wasn't until they intensified that I began to suspect something wasn't right but I wasn't sure what.

Then, suddenly, almost overnight, my blood pressure would become erratic from literally minute to minute, at times giving crazy readings. I began blacking out and passing out. That is when I passed out at work and was taken to the hospital.

In January of 2009 I underwent a Post Fossa Craniectomy with Dr. John M. Tew Jr. M.D. (Neurosurgeon at Mayfield Clinic, Cincinnati, OH). The surgery is not a cure. It is simply to relieve pressure, and hopefully relieve symptoms.

The first couple of days were scary. At one point, I almost lost the use of my legs completely. We now however suspect that an allergic reaction to the pain medicine prescribed was the culprit.

I still experience symptoms from time to time. In May of 2010, after an increase in symptoms again, I underwent a spinal tap that threw me literally into a 3 week tailspin that can best be described as a bad psychadelic trip. I literally could not walk. Light, sound, smells, food made me nauseous and I would vomit. Ironically, Shakeology is literally the only thing that kept me alive for the five days that I spend in bed during that time.

However, I refuse to be a victim to my condition. I do not let it define me. So much so that initially I shyed away from interacting with other Chiari patients. I think it was to distance myself from my condition. Now, however, I embrace it. It is a part of who I am, but it is not who I am. I work to pursue goals that many think impossible.

If you, or someone you know, has Chiari, and have any questions or just need support, please, please, please contact me. I will do everything I can to help. If I can't help, I will put you in touch with someone who can.

My Transformation

In October of 2008, I was diagnosed with a rare congenital condition known as a Chiari Malformation. I was removed from duty and ordered to sit at home, as more tests were run. Only then could we determine the best course of action.

In January 2009, I had brain surgery (Post Fossa Craniectomy) to relieve pressure and reduce impact of symptoms. (Read more about this uncurable condition here).

Long story short, I was a physical wreck. Weak, overweight, out of shape and depressed I needed to prepare to get fit for duty. After years of coaching and training some of Indiana's top youth basketball players, and an intense interest in personal training, I began looking to devise my own plan to get back in shape. After hours on the internet doing reseach, I found P90X. Within minutes I knew it was literally the perfect functional workout for anyone and I ordered.

When we first started, I remember telling Michele that all I wanted was to lose about 20 lbs. I thought that coming from a family of large, "barrel chested men" that I was destined to just be big and even said, "I could never have abs that show" because of my build.

Well, I lost 15 lbs in the first round and couldn't believe how good I felt after the first 90 days! This was even NOT doing Plyometrics through the first 90 days and even only being able to do 20 minutes of Yoga the very first Yoga X day.

We took some time off during the summer before starting again. This time I was determined to put the Plyometrics DVD in, even though I couldn't do it all the way through. I lost another 10 lbs the second 90 days. I hadn't felt this good in years! That's when I made up my mind to sign as a Beachbody Coach.

Round 3. This is when things really began to change for me. The first two rounds were amazing and brought me out of my darkness from surgery. This round is the round that I found myself doing the workouts all the way through. I felt strong when I walked. I had amazing stamina. I was becoming a different person. I was moving beyond my own expectations. I dropped another 10 lbs but now was beginning to see an amazing transformation in my body.

In March of 2010 I was ready to step up my game. I decided I wanted Shaun T's Insanity. It was a huge step for me. I am not built for high intensity training. I'm a lifter, not a runner or jumper. But I was ready to take myself out of my comfort zone. It was AMAZING! I finished, got my "I earned it" t-shirt and lost another 5 lbs and.....I found some abs I had never seen before in my life!!

Since I've also done Turbo Fire, another round of Insanity, began running, hiking, swimming, biking, etc. I've even done another round of P90X where I did my very first unassisted pull-ups in my life! All total, I've lost over 45 lbs. I just celebrated my 40th birthday!

Next week, we are starting another round of P90X. This time, I'm going for ripped!

Remember, I started this wanting to lose 20 lbs. 45 lbs later, I'm going for ripped, at 40 years old. It's all because I bought in to BeachBody. It's changed my life. I can show you how to let it change yours. It's been an amazing ride so far, and I'm just getting started!

My Career

I am a full time career firefighter and a full time BeachBody Coach. I love helping people. Everything I have gone through and done in my life has lead me right to where I am and I couldn't be happier.

I joined the Speedway Fire Department in 2003. In 2005 I was promoted to Engineer. After a short stint on an engine, I was moved to a rescue squad after a department restructuring. In January 2010 I transferred to C Shift.

In August of 2009, after brain surgery, I started P90X. It changed my life. In August of 2009, I decided to share that feeling and help others change their own lives. I signed as a Beachbody Coach. I have literally helped hundreds of normal people just like you and I, realize their health and fitness goals.

After years of sales jobs and various business adventures, I finally found something that I believe in. Beachbody is an amazing company from their products to their philosophy. There are so many rewards that it's almost unbelievable. It's not about "selling" something. It's about "telling" people about the personal changes we experience in our lives. It's rare when someone can say this, but I've found what I'm looking for.

My Family

Family is extremely important to me. They are the reason I do everything that I do.

Michele and I have been married for 20 years. Several years ago, we almost lost each other. Despite many people around us who thought for many different reasons that we should not stay together, we fought with everything we had to reconnect. It has been the greatest decision we ever made. By tearing it down, we started from scratch and found a happiness we could never imagine. She literally has become my best friend. Very simply, she is my reason.

Z achary is my oldest son. He is a Senior at Wabash College, a highly respected private liberal arts college in Crawfordsville, IN. Wabash is commonly referred to as the "Ivy League of the Midwest". They also are well known for their outstanding Division III football program. He was recruited to play after a stellar high school career that was highlighted by many honors that included conference player of the year, 3 years All-State and most notably a member of the Indiana Football All-Star North-South game. In addition, Zachary carried a 3.7 gpa.

Tyler is heading to play collegiate basketball at NAIA Goshen College. Tyler was recruited by several out of state Division 1 schools but opted to stay close to home. His high school basketball career consisted of compiling a 61-12 as a starter, including 2 County Championships, 2 Sectional Championships, and 1 Regional Championship. His honors are All-County, All-Sagamore Conference, Sagamore Conference Player of the Year, Indy Metro West Player of the Year, and Indiana All-State. His AAU career consisted of playing for some of the top teams in the country including at 2005 AAU National Championship. He also graduated with a high gpa of 3.4.

Maleah, is the baby. She is our accidental angel. She brings sunshine and innocence into our lives daily. She is smart, spunky, artistic, loving and very independent. She loves to create anything, especially drawing and painting and enjoys playing soccer. We were blessed with the rare opportunity to get to do it again, this time with a beautiful little girl.

Michael is our adopted son. He came to us wanting to change the direction of his life and felt his best chances were under our roof. He has done an amazing job with his life, turning his gpa around, working hard to physically improve his athelticism and his game. He reaches another milestone in his path of goals in August when he reports to Danville Junior College in Danville, IL to play basketball. He is a good kid, that is growing into an even finer man with his lightheartedness, compassion, fortitude, loyalty and dedication to be the best man he can be. We are proud to call him one of our own.

I love each of them for who they are individually and I am truly blessed to have them in my life.

Firefighters

FIREFIGHTERS ONLY

This page is us, firefighters. It is no secret that our job is demanding. With the physical and mental stress we are exposed to on a regular basis, our bodies take a toll. Being in shape helps combat that stress. It prevents injuries, breakdown and even increases our stamina, ensuring that those who depend on us most, get the service they deserve.

But, despite all of this, I still must pose the question: why are many of our brothers and sisters dying of such diseases and heart disease and diabetes at an early age? Why are a great majority of firefighters fighting obesity?

Truth is, many don't exercise like they should. And even more don't eat like they should. Everyone knows the stereotypes about firehouse food and the recliner. Well, the reality is that all stereotypes are based on some truth. The cold hard fact is that firehouse life needs a makeover and fast!

What can we do? Well the old saying goes, "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink" and that is true. We can't force anyone to do anything. The more we try, the worse it gets. But what we can do, is set a good example for those around us. To make a committment to work to educate ourselves and enrich our own lives so that others around us can see for themselves that there are other options. That is my goal. As a Beachbody Coach and a Firefighter, I have set my sites on recruiting other like minded individuals to help me slowly begin a network of firefighters committed to helping us save our own, one firefighter at a time.

For more information, please contact me. Also, follow my twitter account "Fit2fightfire". Also, check out my new website dedicated to firefighters www.fit2fightfire.com

What is Shakeology all about anyway?

This honestly may be the greatest thing for your health that you've ever stumbled upon. I had heard about Shakeology for several months and dismissed what I had heard (and I am a BeachBody Coach!). Finally after many months of hearing about it, Michele and I decided we should at least try it. I tell people all the time, it literally changed everything.

Shakeology isn't magic. It's common sense.

Shakeology is a once a day, all natural, meal replacement that contains dried and ground fruits, vegetables and plants from allover the world. It has no stimulants, additives, or preservatives of any kind. (Find out where Shakeology's ingredients come from here)

It is NOT a supplement, it is NOT a protein shake, it is a meal replacement.

Not only is it low calorie, low fat, high fiber, high protein meal replacement but it is literally the healthiest meal you could eat all day with almost no exceptions. The nutritional equivalent is unbelievable. It is something like 5-9 plates of salad. It has a low rating on the Glycemic Index Scale. Which basically means it burns slower in your body thus regulating your blood sugar. Additionally, many people have had great results with implementing Shakeology as part of their weight loss program!

It also serves as a daily multi-vitamin and contains 21 anti-oxidants and phyto-nutrients. Oh and it contains digestive enzymes and pro-biotics for optimal digestive health.

It isn't expensive. It's a convenient priority.

I honestly laugh when I hear this. It literally is about priorities. I've had people tell me it's too expensive as they are eating their $12 lunch. It's only $3-$4 a day, for a meal, that is healthier than anything else you could eat. You would have trouble buying groceries and packing your lunch for that everyday! Throw in all of the vitamins, anti-oxidants, digestive enzymes, etc an
d figure out how much you actually save everyday drinking Shakeology. Then throw in you can just shake it up and conveniently take it with you and drink it anywhere...it's a no brainer!

But don't take my word for it, take a doctors. How about 100 doctors???

If you would like a free sample, or have any questions, please contact me!

Beachbody Programs

The Beachbody Solution

P90X

  • P90X is my personal favorite. I started out with this program in 2009. I check out other programs and try other things from time to time, but I always come back to this one. It is simple and effective. Thousands of images on the internet don’t lie. If you’re looking to physically be what you have always dreamed of, this is what you’re looking for.

  • P90X combines cardio, strength, and flexibility to produce the ultimate workout program. It not only works major muscle groups, but heavily stresses the use of the core through synergistic exercises, all the while keeping the heart rate up. This burns fat throughout the workout while at the same time building muscle. The increased muscle, will then in turn, increase the metabolism and stimulate more fat burn.

  • It is designed in micro and macro cycles that constantly rotate, causing muscle confusion and thus preventing the body from reach plateaus. It is set over a 90 days. The best thing about it is that it is already scheduled and all you have to do is literally put in the DVD and push play. You immediately have one of the worlds most famous personal trainers in your living room, showing you each and every technique and working with you every step of the way

Power 90

  • The pre-cursor to P90X. Tony Horton’s in home boot camp uses Tony’s Sectional Progression™ technique. These workouts are effective and will make you sweat in as little as 30 minutes!

Insanity

  • My second personal favorite. Shaun T is unrelenting yet supportive and energetic. He brings a fire that makes you want to push yourself even when exhausted. This is where we see results!

This program is broken down into three parts. Phase 1 is 4 weeks of intense high intensity training. It’s designed to get your heart pumping and sweat pouring. There are no weights or bands needed. It’s all body weight. That is followed by a “Recovery Week” of moderate activity and stretching. The last segment is 4 weeks of “Max” workouts. These are designed to take your game to another level and see what we’re really made of.

Insanity: The Asylum!

  • This is for hardcore fitness freaks. It is an intense 30 day agility sports training program. The discs are accompanied by two bands and a sports agility ladder.

  • Basically this is a step up from Insanity. It is unrelenting with little breaks. It gets your heart pumping the sweat dripping but is as much about muscle control as it is power and explosion. It will make you work and it will give you that extra push you’ve been looking for.

Shakeology workout DVD's

  • This is where I start a lot of my customers. It contains a 30 minute and a 50 minute DVD. Each DVD consists of a complete, total body workout. It isn’t over the top but it does make you work. I recommend most start simply with doing the 30 minute DVD two times per week. Then maybe adding a third. Soon, replace one of the 30 minutes with the 50 minute and continually working their way up until they’re comfortable with moving onto whichever one of Beachbody’s programs is right for them. This is a great place for anyone who hasn’t exercised in awhile to get back in.
